Challenging The Status Quo

How accurate is automatic number plate recognition?
17th July 2018

This document discusses the UK standards of ANPR and what do the percentage figures mean?

We also cover the myths about having to use a dedicated Expensive ANPR camera.

  • Most importantly why do you need ANPR?
  • What is it for?
  • How does it need to work?

We Tested a new ANPR engine from Intelico called Accuplate and refer to that during this report.

What is ANPR/LPR?

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) or Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) or even Automatic number plate recognition (ALPR) is a technology that uses Optical character recognition on images to detect characters on a Licence plate.  The system will detect a plate and convert the characters on the image into text format.  The plate can then be stored in a database and searched later if needed.  This can often be confused by end users who just want to see clear plates on the video system and not for the data to be stored as text.
